1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
One of the two very important materials for growth is the word of God. Spiritual growth is a personal thing first before attending to the things concerning other people but a lot of people pay more attention to doing the right thing with a wrong motive.
The reason why you want to study or read the Bible which contains the word of God is to grow and be able to stand strong in the faith you have just received not to show to people that you are a good Bible student. The proof that you growing with the word is that a time will come when you begin to conform to all that you have seen and read in the word because you'll begin to practice them.
A very key and important question on growing spiritually in the word is WHY DO YOU WANT TO READ YOUR BIBLE? do you want to read because a lot of your friend knows the Bible better than you and you want to challenge them, Or you want to sound deep with big revelations.
One thing people don't know is that you don't read your bible to get approved by God, you do because you want to know God better and get close to him. It's for your own good. Growing in the word means that by the continuous engagement of yourself in and with the word of God you'll begin to grow in trusting God, understanding who God is, getting directions for your life, standing strong in times of tribulation, coming into the knowledge of his love, understanding how God speaks and hearing his voice.
The word is the Basis for success:
(Joshua 1:8) every good success that a man in Christ will experience is founded on the understanding of the word. Psalm 1:2 calls a man whose delight is in the word blessed. The best set of instructions that can guide a man's life to achieving the best is in the Bible. There are certain instructions that God gave men in the Bible that if we apply them to our life these days we will have good success. You can only get those instructions when you have continuously engaged your mind with the word of God in scriptures.
The word of God is able to make a man wise:
wisdom is also one of the signs of spiritual growth in a believer, the word of God teaches you faith and strengthens your conviction about God, Solomon said, there is no new thing under the sun, which means many things happens by repetitions, wisdom helps you know how to attend to issues, there is a wisdom not of God, it is called foolishness because it contains evil, the only kind of wisdom you can develop from the word is the wisdom of God because it encourages doing right. (Tim 3:15)
The word of God brings salvation to your soul and helps renew your mind:
when we accepted the life of Christ it is our spirit that was recreated that got saved not our soul that is why a believer can still fall into sin. Many a times, it is not the devil that causes a believer to sin but because the mind has not been renewed with the word of God.

The word of God is able to judges between right and wrong intentions:
A lot of folks ask their leaders a couple of times if it's right for them to do some things, but even their leaders won't have a definite answer because the answer depends on the intentions and motives of their heart, many time some people have asked me if it's right for them to put in trousers as a lady, I know the answer and can answer them biblically, but merely looking at this guys their reason for wanting to wear trousers is bizzare. The book of Timothy says you don't need anyone to teach you anything that the annoiting inside of you is able to teach you all things. what that anointing does is that it guides you while studying the scriptures and it brings to your remembrance all that you have studied about Christ.
The word of God is a able to discern the thought of your heart and it makes you know that which is right to do and that which is wrong
When we begin to see believers with different kinds of character and attitude that Jesus did not encourage, you will know not by discernment that they have not been staying with the word of God. But If they claimed to have been reading the word and people can not see the proof through their character, then ask them to check their motive, because when your motive for doing something is wrong, it's impossible for your life to show the result of that thing which you claimed to be doing. The reason why growth through the word is important is because other materials for growth like prayer and listening to sermons or songs have their root established in the word. You can not pray effectively without the word. If you're not grounded in the word, sermons, teaching, doctrines and songs can mislead you.
Jesus taught us about the father, which means you cannot claim to know God if you don't Know the word.
The totality of a man's life is dependent on the word
Matthew 4:4
[4]But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"
