What is spiritual growth? As many think, spiritual growth is not the growth of God's spirit in you neither is it the growth of your spirit man, spiritual growth is coming into the knowledge of who Christ is, what he did for you a believer and who your are in him .  Coming into the maturity of the stature of Christ is spiritual growth.
A lot of young people want to grow spiritually but does not know how to balance using the tools for spiritual growth, many people want to grow very fast spiritually but at the end they will notice that their growth is not even and people who don't know much as them can do better than them when it comes to attending to life issues. The first thing to note when trying to grow spiritually is to really understand that growth takes process and it takes time. Any efforts to grow very fast might cause imbalance or deficiency in the growth of a man, and also death. 
Let's take a look at the physical realm a woman who desires that her newborn baby grow very fast will not because of that feed a one-week-old baby an adult food. In this sense, food is not harmful to the baby, but for the physical growth of a person the kind of food they feed on varries on the age of that person. As delicious as peppered meat, you cannot give a two weeks old baby to feed on it you will be called a murderer so also is the spiritual growth if you start to consume the right thing at the wrong time no matter how good it feels in the ear, it means you're skipping process and you can become confused over a period of time because you won't be able to tell if you're growing or not.
So in essence, spiritual growth is gradual and it involves a step by step excersise.
That is why it is advisable to get a mentor/descipler, they will put you through what you should do.
for this teaching we will be using the plant as a basis for understanding our topic.
Let's take a look at the life of a plant, the life of a plant that will become a tree started as a seed sown into the ground the next thing required of a seed sown is to germinate and grow with the help of the following materials; water, fertilizer, sunlight, and other practices which includes creating space for the plants by clearing and so on. Similar is the spiritual life of a man there are materials needed for growth which include reading the Bible, praying, listening to sermons, reading spiritual books, listening to spiritual songs e.t.c.  as good as this materials can help your spiritual growth, also you can be affected when not used properly. Just like the plant that started his life with a seed, so is the life of a man the seed planted in a man's life is the Gospel of Christ which he accepts that makes him a believer then the quest for growth sets in.
Consciously we will look at the tools for growing spiritually and the balance ( where people get it wrong).
