As believers, is there an order of priority in asking what we desire from God?
Or, since God is our Father, do we go to Him for any and everything or we tell Him but a few?
Is there any restriction placed on our 'asking'?
Let's discuss...
You must have come across Matthew 6:33:
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
I know you know this verse but our answers are not just in this verse but in the verses that preceeds and follows it.
In preceeding verses, the Bible encourages us not to worry about our daily needs. It says, we should not worry about what we would eat or wear as there is more to life than food and clothing.
Now, is the Bible saying we should not eat?
No right?
The Bible is only pointing our minds to something, which is that, there is something weightier than food and clothing.
The Bible went further to give examples of different creatures of God and how God sees to their needs.
Then, in verse 33, we are told to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.
That's complementing what we have said earlier. This is saying that, THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS is more weightier than our daily needs.
It does not end there.
We are told that when we seek God's kingdom first and His righteousness, all other "things", that is our clothing, food and all will be given to us as well.
So that's like saying that, we shouldn't focus on our needs as they are little and inconsequential in comparison to God's kingdom and His Righteousness.
So where does that put talking to the Father?
Are we then expected to keep quiet or lay low concerning our needs?
The answer isn't far fetched.
It's in the same chapter of the Bible we have been considering. We are not saying don't talk to God about what's bothering you. No!
We are saying, focus more on praying God centered prayers. Take note of the word "more"
I know someone is saying that "What if I'm hungry and I have nothing to eat? Do I keep praying God centered prayers or I pray that God gives me food?"
That's one thoughtful question😊
Nobody mentioned not praying about getting food. What we said is that, DO NOT WORRY. The reason being that, when you worry, you are incapacitating your faith so you most likely won't see God at work that way.
Plus, we know that without faith, it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6a).
So, yes there is an order of priority to praying.
But no, it does not mean you can't talk to God about the little things bothering you.
The message here is DO NOT WORRY.
Hope you learnt something?
You have a question?
Then be free to ask.
God has blessed you.
